In order to provide all types of postal services from one point and exchange the postal objects from various countries, GPO has been established in Kathmandu in 1878 A.D. GPO works as the only one Office of Exchange (OE) in Nepal. After the membership of UPU; and introduction of the foreign mail exchange, the role of GPO has further been enhanced. GPO is the major operating level office which works under the Postal Service Department. After 2018 B.S., GPO also accomplishes the services of the then Central Regional Postal Directorate.

Based on the government policies and international norms, GPO delivers both domestic and international services. Within Kathmandu Valley there are 7 postal counters; 10 Area Postal Offices under which 42 Extra Postal Offices are operating to provide the designated services.

• Mobile postal service within Kathmandu valley
• Renewal of FM (up to 500 watt)
